Sri Lankan style Dhal Curry recipe / Parippu Curry / පරිප්පු කරිය / split lentils curry
dhal curry or split red lentils curry is a most famous curry in Sri Lanka. Almost every hotels in Sri Lanka have dhal curry on their menu. There are some variations in dhal curries but the basic way of making dhal curry is same in all the varieties. Let's make the easiest dhal curry first. All you need is split red lentils, onions, garlic, a green chilli, turmeric, chilli powder, coconut milk, salt and water. If you can find some curry leaves, you can add them too. But that is totally optional as it only gives a good aroma to your curry.
Lets get started!!!
Split red lentils/ dhal/ parippu 1 cup
chopped onions 2 tbs
chopped garlic 2 tsp
1 green chili (sliced)
turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
chili powder 1 1/2 tsp ( you can always adjust the quantity according to your heat level)
water 1 1/ 2 cups
thick coconut milk 1/2 cup ( if you don't have coconut milk, you can use fresh milk as a substitute
Wash lentils properly and soak them in water for about 30 mins. Then add all the ingredients except thick coconut milk to a pan and let it cook in medium flame until lentils get soft and boiled. Then add thick coconut milk and cook for about 5 more minutes until there is no raw flavor of coconut milk. Adjust the level of salt according to your taste.
Note - You can eat this yummy curry with bread, rice, string hoppers, flat breads.
